BIO

Brian McLachlan

Similar to the majestic Octocorn (part octopus, part unicorn), Brian McLachlan is part writer, part artist, all cartoonist. Coming at assignments from both aspects his art is infused with strong storytelling and his comic writing with well planned and practical visuals. When a company has an assignment where artist and writer need to be closely linked together, Brian is often hired to play one or both roles. His sense of humour and fun also puts the "comic" back in "comic book".

Kid's Stuff

For over two years Brian has been writing what's become Owl Magazine's most popular feature, the comic Alex & Charlie. In addition to that, he provides Owl with other fun like puzzles, games, valentines and even a cootie catcher. For the Toronto Star he writes kid's horoscopes in the Brand New Planet, which also ran his web comic The Princess Planet. Textbook titan Thomson Nelson is also a regular client and he has worked for the Wizards of the Coast, Young People's Press, Fuel Magazine, and YM.

Grown Ups

For an older audience Brian wrote the office space/record store/culture jamming romantic comedy, No Dead Time, published as an original graphic novel by Oni Press. He has contributed a short comic to the upcoming uTOpia II from Coachhouse Press and had a comic in local author favourite, Taddle Creek magazine. His retro action heroes Smooth N Natural appeared in Phamous 69. Tic Tac Machete, a comic with Bugs Bunny-like logic and a frenetic jungle adventurer, was a winner in the Dark Horse Strip Search Contest, and has been published by Too Much Coffee Man Magazine, Yellow Rat Bastard and The Varsity. For several years he wrote for Vice Magazine under the pen name Obi Wan Shinobi and has contributed to other hipster mags The People Have Spoken and Sleazenation.
